RESUMING IN THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT AND SOUNDNESS OF THE MIND
RESUMING IN THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT AND SOUNDNESS OF THE MIND. by Noel Unekwu Abdullahi (Long post alert!)
The holiday has been fun filled and its time to go back to school. In looking for something appropriate and relevant to give as a charge to my wards, I received inspiration to share with them on something I titled "RESUMING IN THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT".
My text was taken from Lk 4:14;
"And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about."
Officially we were all given the only resource that is equitably distributed to all men which is time, to rest from all the stress of work and school. It is irrelevant whether you rested or not,now it's time to go back to school. In what power are you returning? What did you spend your time doing during the holiday? Do not be deceived whatsoever a man Soweth, He shall reap.
We are not all resuming the same way, we went on holidays.
Some have tasted some stuff this holiday and are coming back worst than they went.A lot happens in two months you know; many have established themselves in all manner of vices from drugs, to alcohol, boyfriend and girlfriend things e.t.c.
You would have noticed how tall some of your colleagues have grown, with deep voices and broader chests and how the young ladies begin to look more attractive.Beyond the physical changes you observe, a lot of things that have changed ,you may not readily see with your physical eyes except by close observation ..some of your contemporaries have changed their values, they now want to be known as bad guys and happening babes. They have suddenly become bolder at doing what is wrong and all the gist now is about babes and booze.
They have resumed in the power of the flesh and are out to win many coverts. Are you going to be one of their converts? I know you will say no, but if you do not return in the power of the spirit, you deceive yourself. If they don't fully convert you, they will so intimidate you, that you can not boldly take your righteous standing in what you know to be right.
How do you overcome this intimidation?
Return in the power of the spirit!
When Jesus returned in the power of spirit, nothing could intimidate him. Rather news about his good works spread, and he began to raise disciples and coverts to himself -Sequel to this, Jesus used his holiday time to build his spiritual muscles.
What did you do with yours?
Opportunities to build our spiritual muscles were created for so many of us by our Parents, Guardians and churches via all kinds of family retreats, and Youth programs. Some participated and made the effort, others treated it with disdain and utter contempt. Listen, you don’t expect to sow rice and reap cassava-The harvest will come! However, it is not too late to change your harvest if you can take heed today.
Paul in writing to Timothy gave him a template on how not to be intimidated by his peers and even those older than him. This template helps you overcome evil with good and is a panacea for all issues of esteem. Its the foundation, that is required to “Resume in the power of the spirit” and it is plainly put thus in 1 Tim 4:12-15 :
12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
13 Till I come, GIVE ATTENDANCE TO READING, to exhortation, to doctrine (Teaching)
14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
15. Meditate (train your mind to stay upon the word of God) upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.
What we need to return in the power of the spirit is readily available, and most times at our disposal. However the gap is in the last verse, which talks about MEDITATING and GIVING OURSELVES WHOLLY to what we have been taught. You can become the next talk of the school if you can diligently practice the spiritual discipline of meditation-note I didn’t say reading the bible. When you do, ”YOUR PROFITING WILL APPEAR UNTO ALL”- I didn’t say so, God said so!
As you resume in the power of the spirit, your academics must not suffer. You are primarily in school to get an education first, therefore every other thing should be secondary. You heard me ! Your primary assignment on campus is not to be a fellowship president , music director, instrumentalist, entrepreneur. You have the rest of your life to major on those- your major assignment now, should be getting your degree or diploma. Please do not misrepresent Christ in your academics.
Jesus grew in wisdom (intellect), stature (Physically) and favour with man and God (socially)-Resuming in the power of the spirit does not make you a recluse, rather it attracts those who want to change but don’t know how, as they admire your lifestyle, and draw close to you for guidance and direction.Jesus as a friend of sinners was not made a sinner, but rather turned sinners to saints. That should be the goal of any ungodly association, else maintain the basic status quo of not being unequally yoked..the end of every relation must be clearly defined.Do not engage in purposeless associations, it would waist your precious time and drain you emotionally.
In education, goal setting should be seen as the foundation of all that needs to be achieved. Without a goal, one is like a traveler without a destination, a pilot without a compass, a letter without an address and a football pitch without a goal post.
What is your academic goal for this term or semester?
Paul set a goal to win the prize in 1 Cor 9 vs 24
24.Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it.
25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.
He further admonishes us to run, so as to win the prize.
Which prize are you gunning for this term/semester? It has to be clear, and you must be willing to pay the price to win the prize. The Key element required is different dimensions of self control.
The great gulf between the GOALS we set and their ACCOMPLISHMENTS are different dimensions of self-control as illustrated in the article picture. The starting point of any accomplishment is a burning desire, which makes it possible for one to go through the rigors of Discipline and other forms of self denial..As we do this, the gulf between being a goal setter to being an accomplished /successful person is filled and we can walk across to our victory of accomplishments.
The added bonus of establishing positive relationships with people, who have already achieved the results you desire, will give you leverage and help make the journey less stressful..but stress is part of the journey and part of life-Accept it and don’t run away from it.
Lest I forget; the first two weeks of resumption is key to our success. Its not idle time in reality, but a time to plan and strategically position oneself for success. Ask for the school calendar, see the big picture for the term or semester and proactively draw up your own personal time-table for success.
I look forward to celebrating your prizes as you resume this term/semester in the power of the spirit and soundness of the mind.
If you are a student take heed to these things.
If a parent, guardian, uncle or aunt, share with your wards. It would do them a lot of good.
